Eskom Expo Empowers Future Scientists Through Regional Science Fairs

by Kim K
Eskom Expo hosts regional science fairs across South Africa, empowering young scientists to showcase innovation and compete for global opportunities.

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is set to host a series of regional science fairs in 35 regions nationwide, providing a competitive and inspiring platform for learners to showcase their scientific research, innovative ideas, and problem-solving skills.

Nurturing Scientific Inquiry and Research Skills

Each year, thousands of learners from across South Africa participate in the expo’s various stages, with this year’s finalists selected from a pool of over 17,500 learners who showcased their projects at school and district-level expos.

These early stages included mandatory expos and workshops aimed at developing scientific inquiry and research skills.

The Next Phase: Regional Science Fairs

The regional science fairs mark the next phase of the journey, where the most promising young minds from diverse communities will compete and receive critical feedback from expert judges in fields such as engineering, health sciences, environmental studies, and technology.

“Eskom recognises STEMI – science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation – as a strategic enabler of South Africa’s growth, innovation capacity, and long-term sustainability,” said Mologadi Motshele, acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation.

“Through the Eskom Expo, we are investing in future leaders who will drive positive change and advance our country’s competitiveness.”

Fostering Growth in STEMI for the Future

The expo’s focus on STEMI aligns with national goals to enhance educational outcomes and equip youth with the skills needed in the modern economy. Participating learners gain hands-on experience with the scientific process, from hypothesis formation to data analysis and presentation.

This initiative also encourages collaboration and mentorship, as learners receive guidance from educators, researchers, and industry professionals. Beyond academic growth, the expo nurtures confidence, public speaking, and critical thinking skills essential for any future career.

“By cultivating interest and excellence in STEMI from an early age, the Eskom Expo not only develops individual potential but also contributes to the broader goals of economic growth, innovation, and social equity.

These young scientists are the future problem-solvers who will address the challenges of energy, climate change, healthcare, food security, and digital transformation. Our ongoing support of the Eskom Expo reflects our belief that investing in young minds today ensures a sustainable, skills-driven South Africa tomorrow,” added Motshele.

A Platform for Recognition and Reward

Participants at the Regional Science Fairs will have the opportunity to engage with fellow learners, educators, and professionals from various STEMI fields. These interactions are designed to build critical thinking and research skills while enhancing communication and presentation abilities.

In addition to showcasing their research, young scientists will stand a chance to win prestigious awards, including prizes for the Best Female Project, Best Innovation Project, Best Energy Project, and Best Development Project.

Building the Future of Science and Engineering

Eskom Expo Executive Director, Parthy Chetty, said: “The Eskom Expo is South Africa’s only national initiative that aims to grow future scientists and engineers for our country. These regional science fairs are the first step to our young scientists engaging with professionals in a meaningful way, which will further develop their research ideas and innovations. We wish them well in the judging process and urge them to continue refining their projects.”

Competing for a Prestigious International Opportunity

With more than 6,000 projects set to be showcased across the country this year, young scientists will compete for the highly coveted opportunity to represent their regions and provinces at the prestigious Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) at the Emperors Palace Conference Centre in Kempton Park from 6 to 10 October 2025.

ISF participants will compete for a multitude of prizes, bursaries, opportunities, and a chance to be selected to showcase their projects at international science fairs in the United States, Asia, Europe, and the rest of Africa.

Judging Opportunities for Professionals

Prospective judges are encouraged to apply to judge at an upcoming regional science fair to gain experience in evaluating research projects at the Eskom Expo ISF.

Professionals such as engineers, doctors, veterinarians, teachers, lecturers, researchers, scientists, and IT professionals are being sought.

Teachers can earn SACE Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points, while scientists registered with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) can earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.

Other professionals can obtain credit through their respective professional bodies.
