Open Chair’s ‘Friends in High Places’ Soars to New Heights with KFC Partnership

Open Chair’s ‘Friends in High Places’ and KFC Africa uplift young women in advertising with mentorship on the Cape Wheel during Loeries Week.

The Cape Wheel at the V&A Waterfront became more than just a landmark during Loeries Creative Week 2025 — it turned into a moving boardroom in the sky. Hosted by Open Chair, the non-profit driving mentorship for women in advertising and marketing, Friends in High Places gave 60 young women the opportunity to connect with top industry leaders while taking in panoramic views of Cape Town.

Mentorship in Motion

In a format as daring as it was symbolic, mentees rotated through capsules on the Cape Wheel for 90 minutes of one-on-one mentorship. Each rotation created a safe space for honest dialogue — conversations that ranged from imposter syndrome and leadership to navigating the realities of the advertising industry.

For many, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that sparked new connections and inspired renewed confidence. “Friends in High Places reveals what happens when we bring women together who wouldn’t normally have the chance to meet and share their experiences,” says Suhana Gordhan, founder of Open Chair. “As we ascended together, so too did the aspirations and confidence of every young woman who took part.”

Building Community and Connection

Open Chair’s mission has always been to create inclusive spaces where women are seen, heard and supported. The event was built on trust, pride and purpose, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to creating meaningful industry connections that extend far beyond a single event.

Board Member Melina McDonald adds, “We witnessed genuine moments of connection, hope, and the kind of relationships that will sustain these women throughout their careers.”

A Partnership Built on Purpose

This year’s event partnered with KFC Africa, whose leadership team stepped in not only as sponsors but as mentors. With women representing 60% of KFC’s workforce across 22 African countries, the brand’s commitment to elevating female talent is woven into its culture.

Senior leaders Nolo Thobejane (Chief People, Culture and Purpose Officer), Unathi Ncunyana (HR Director), and Andra Nel (Head of Corporate Affairs) shared personal insights on leadership, growth, and resilience.

“At KFC, we believe in feeding people’s potential with integrity and respect,” says Nel. “Supporting Friends in High Places isn’t just about mentorship — it’s about helping people rise up, be visible, and lead with unapologetic ambition. When we champion growth, we ignite possibility.”

Rising Together, Leading Tomorrow

Like all Open Chair initiatives, Friends in High Places set out to bridge the gap between emerging talent and women leaders who have already paved the way.

“The advertising and marketing industry needs more brilliant women like those who made new friends in high places,” says Fran Luckin, Open Chair Board Member. “It’s not enough to get them into the room — we must make sure they stay, thrive and lead the agenda.”

Through its partnership with KFC, Open Chair continues to elevate women’s voices in creative industries — proving that when women rise together, entire industries evolve.
