On November 10, Rosatom will once again present its international project aimed at raising nuclear awareness – the Global Atomic Quiz 2024 – in celebration of World Science Day. This year’s quiz marks its fifth anniversary and features a special commemorative edition. Conducted online in 13 languages, the quiz will include events especially designed for schoolchildren and students worldwide, from Brazil to Kazakhstan, including countries in Africa. Participants will have the opportunity not only to expand their knowledge and win unique prizes, but also to uncover intriguing facts about the surprising and diverse applications of nuclear science. The quiz will be available in English, Russian, Bengali, Hungarian, Spanish, Portuguese, Kyrgyz, Kazakh, Mongolian, Turkish, Uzbek, Arabic, and Indonesian.
In 2023, the online quiz attracted over 10,000 participants from more than 60 countries, highlighting the growing interest in nuclear topics. It would be beneficial for Africa to actively participate and utilise this platform to share knowledge and ideas with other regions of the world. Taking part in the quiz could provide a valuable opportunity for Africa to strengthen its position in the international scientific arena and showcase its potential.
To take part in this global project, participants need to visit the quiz website on November 10. They will have a full 24 hours to answer 25 questions of varying difficulty and topics, including the potential of harnessing the power of a star right here on Earth, methods for easily accessing the inner chambers of ancient pyramids and volcanoes, and the value of heat from a nuclear power station in tropical regions.
In celebration of the quiz’s fifth anniversary, the questions will be organised into five distinct groups, each highlighting one of the major spheres of nuclear applications. This structure provides a rare glimpse into a nuclear world that extends far beyond energy production—from boosting agricultural yields to pioneering space exploration. Additionally, the project will include infographics on various nuclear applications, offering intriguing facts that participants can use as hints for the quiz.
All participants of the Global Atomic Quiz 2024 will receive a digital certificate, which can be saved on their devices and shared with friends on social media. The top 100 participants will be awarded a unique prize: an atomic puzzle featuring nuclear-themed pieces that unveil some of the most fascinating applications of nuclear technology. Additionally, a special prize awaits the top three winners: a trip to Russia. All winners will be announced on the project’s website by November 22.
The Global Atomic Quiz is not merely a popular science quiz but a genuinely global educational project that explains the fundamentals of nuclear physics, highlights the importance of nuclear technologies in everyday life, and emphasises the role that nuclear power plays in preserving our fragile planet. Since its launch in 2020, the Global Atomic Quiz has been conducted in over 11 languages and has attracted more than 40,000 enthusiasts from over 70 countries.
A testament to the company’s readiness to create opportunities for Africa’s youth and promote the benefits of nuclear energy is Rosatom’s Atoms Empowering Africa competition. Since its inception in 2015, Rosatom’s Atoms Empowering Africa competition has been encouraging African youth to explore and present the benefits of nuclear energy. This year’s winners, from South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, Sudan have demonstrated exceptional creativity and dedication in showcasing the potential of nuclear energy on the African continent.
