Engen Advances National Trucker Wellness Drive

by Kim K
Driving Wellness Forward: Engen’s leadership team – including Garth Karstens (Engen Sales Specialist), Goolam Rawoot (Engen Truck Stop Network Manager), and Sharveen Maharaj (Engen Commercial GM) – join a Trucking Wellness nurse and a truck driver during the 2025 Engen Driver Wellness campaign. As Transport Month comes to a close, Engen continues to champion the health and wellbeing of South Africa’s truck drivers, the essential workers who keep our economy moving.

As Transport Month closes, Engen’s annual Driver Wellness campaign has again delivered vital healthcare support to South Africa’s truck drivers. These workers are the backbone of the national economy, yet face long hours, isolation, and heavy pressure on their physical and mental health.

A Decade of Impactful Wellness Outreach
For over ten years, Engen Driver Wellness has provided free health support to the road freight community. The programme helps truckers take absolute control of their wellbeing despite the demands of life on the road.

Nationwide Screenings Across Eight Provinces
In partnership with Trucking Wellness, an initiative of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI), this year’s campaign delivered screenings at 29 Engen Truck Stops and Engen 1-Stops nationwide. Between 20 October and 13 November 2025, truck drivers from eight provinces participated.

Key Results From the 2025 Campaign
A total of 1 503 health screenings took place. Each driver received checks for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, malaria, TB, STIs, HIV, and BMI, as well as a complimentary Engen tote bag.

The findings included:
• 53.6% had abnormal results needing follow-up
• 9.9% showed high blood pressure
• 28.9% had elevated cholesterol or blood sugar
• High cholesterol: 18.1%
• High blood sugar: 10.8%

These checks provide many drivers with their only opportunity for preventive healthcare and early diagnosis.

Engen’s Commitment to Driver Wellbeing
Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager, says the company is committed to protecting the nation’s transport workers. “Truck drivers keep South Africa’s economy moving. Their health and safety matter to all of us.”

Support Beyond Transport Month
Engen and Trucking Wellness continue to assist drivers throughout the year. Six permanent Trucking Wellness clinics operate at Engen Truck Stops in Beaufort West, Musina, Port Elizabeth, East London, Harrismith, and Kokstad. These clinics offer ongoing access to healthcare professionals, counselling, and treatment support.

Strengthening the Health of the Road Freight Sector
Project Manager Tertius Wessels says Engen’s long-term support ensures meaningful continuity of care. “We reach drivers where they are – on the road. That is how we achieve early diagnosis and safer roads.”

Health, Safety and Industry Sustainability
Adnaan Emeran, Engen’s Commercial Marketing and Business Development Manager, says the campaign reflects Engen’s commitment to the broader transport sector. “Driver Wellness is about caring for the people who keep goods moving. Health, safety, and sustainability are closely linked.”

Emeran adds that Engen will continue to expand access to healthcare for drivers and strengthen partnerships in the freight sector.

Keeping South Africa’s Goods and Drivers Moving
With close to 90% of South Africa’s goods transported by road, Engen Driver Wellness continues to play a vital role in supporting both economic stability and the well-being of thousands of drivers who keep the country moving.
