Eskom invites proposals for 291MW Solar PV projects under its Renewable Energy Offtake Programme. Service providers can bid by 19 September 2025 via the Eskom Tender Bulletin.

Eskom has launched its first Renewable Energy Offtake Programme, inviting service providers to submit proposals for 291MW of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) capacity by 19 September 2025 via the Eskom Tender Bulletin. This milestone initiative forms part of Eskom’s strategy to build a competitive, sustainable energy future while reducing reliance on coal.

A Major Step in South Africa’s Energy Transition

Through the new programme, Eskom is offering large power users the opportunity to secure renewable energy through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). Contracts will range from 5 to 25 years, giving businesses access to reliable, cost-competitive, low-carbon power sourced from Eskom’s renewable energy projects.

The Request for Proposal (RFP) follows an extensive Expression of Interest (EOI) process, where commercial and industrial customers signalled strong demand for direct, long-term renewable energy contracting. This demonstrates a growing appetite for green supply chains, carbon reduction, and alignment with international sustainability standards.

First Projects Expected by 2027

Renewable power from multiple Eskom projects will be rolled out in phases, with the first site expected to begin commercial operation in December 2027. This programme directly supports South Africa’s decarbonisation goals, ensuring both environmental sustainability and long-term economic growth.

“This is the next step in our focused execution of integrating additional renewable energy into the grid,” said Dan Marokane, Eskom Group Chief Executive. “Just over a year into our turnaround strategy, we are not only focused on ending loadshedding but also pivoting Eskom into a sustainable and competitive company, while ensuring secure supply through a customer-centric approach.”

“This programme shows Eskom’s commitment to innovation and a cleaner, more resilient energy future. By offering customised renewable energy solutions, we are helping customers transition to low-carbon operations with secure, competitive supply,” added Agnes Mlambo, Acting Group Executive for Distribution.

Building a Balanced Energy Mix

Eskom is diversifying its energy portfolio with a balanced mix of coal, nuclear, gas, renewable power, and storage technologies such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and pumped hydro. The utility has set ambitious renewable targets:

  • 2GW of construction-ready projects by 2026.
  • 32GW of renewable capacity by 2040, including green hydrogen projects.

Submission Deadline

Service providers interested in the Renewable Energy Offtake Programme must submit proposals via the Eskom Tender Bulletin no later than 19 September 2025.
